|20 June - Flooding on the South Coast|
The Rotary Club of Port Shepstone is working in conjunction with the Winter Warmth/ East Coast Radio project and the South Coast Mall have kindly volunteered their services to assist in this disaster.
Rotary, have a collection point at the South Coast Mall for anyone who would like to donate, we especially need baby clothes, nappies and food. So anyone who would like to help can contact me directly. We especially need 4 X 4's with drivers who have some time to spare to reach the people in the outlying areas who can't get to help. South Coast Helicopter Services have also donated their time and services, and are currently operating in relief efforts in the Umzinto area.
Once again we are indebted to South Coasters who have pulled together to assist our community in times of disasters and tragedy.
We are still receiving numerous calls and emails from concerned tourists, to gain a better understanding of the extent of the flooding on the beaches and surrounding areas. It is our intention to continue with a full Sardine Festival as possible, with a wide range of beach activities. Unfortunately, we have to cancel the Scottburgh Winter Solstice events on the 20-21st June due to high seas and flooding, however the event organisers plan an even bigger 2009 Winter Solstice, which will consist of surf ski, mountain biking and trails runs.
Finally, please note that due to severe flooding of the Port Shepstone Borough Sports Ground, the Ugu Jazz Festival planned for Saturday, 21ST June; has been moved to the Marburg Sports grounds.
Sea conditions are still very choppy after the storm and water visibility is very low especially on the south coast. Lots of dirty water around and debris on the beaches. There is no chance of sardine activity under these conditions so we may have to wait about a week or so for conditions to clear up. Unless there is anything further to report today, there will be an update at 8am on Saturday and 8am on Sunday on the Sardine Hotline 082 284 9495.
